The National Federation of Roofing Contractors Limited (NFRC) is the UK’s largest roofing trade association. Representing a surplus of 70% of the roofing industry in terms of monetary value, the association has a rich history spanning almost 120 years. The association’s central purpose lies in the promotion of quality contractors and products alike, carrying out work to ensure its members are at the forefront of each and every roofing development in the industry.

As members of the NFRC, we thought we would go through some of the key dates in the history of the NFRC and explain a little about what happened at each of these points in the association’s history:

  • A Meeting of Slaters

    Date: 1892

In 1892, a group made up of forty slate merchants and slaters from across the country met up in York with a view to forming this national association. James Townsley, a renowned slater from Hull, initiated and headed up the meeting.

  • Independent LASMMS Formed

    Date: 25th November 1893

Following the meeting in 1892, a further meeting took place. During this meeting, the decision was made to form an independent London Association of Slate Merchants and Master Slaters (LASSMS), with a view to co-operating with the National Association.

  • New Name for LASSMS

    Date: 1912

In 1912, the name of this association was altered to become The London Association of Slate Merchants, Master Slaters and Tilers.

  • Another Name Change

    Date: 1930

Yet another name change came about in 1930, with the association’s third name being the London Association of Master Slaters and Tilers.

  • NFRC joins the IFD

    Date: 1962

In 1962, the NFRC became a member of the prestigious International Federation for the Roofing Trade, IFD.

  • NFRC Celebrates 100 Years

    Date: 2002

This year saw the NFRC reach the 100 year landmark in their service within the roofing industry.

  • NFRC Awarded

    Date: 25th November 2011

On this date, the NFRC was awarded the ‘Raising Training and Skills Standards TrustMark Scheme Operator’ award which is in conjunction with the National Home Improvement Board (NHIC) Educational Trust. This award came for the association’s Competent Roofer scheme which received a wealth of praise from industry officials.

  • Independent LASMMS formed

    Date: 14th September 2015

On this date, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) reached a whopping 1000 trade members for the first time in its history; a huge milestone for the association and its many members alike.
